Advent is here, but it’s never too late to jump in and enjoy the resources the church has to offer.

Advent Reflection Times in the Sanctuary

We are providing several times each week when you may stop by the church for individual prayer, meditation or refection times in the sanctuary through Epiphany on January 6th. The goal is to provide you with some times of quiet contemplation in what is for many of us, a sacred and special place during the sacred and reflective seasons of Advent and Christmas.

We have some resources available for those of you who might find those helpful.  Masks and social distancing are required and we ask that you limit your time to 10-15 minutes.  If several people are already in the sanctuary you might be asked to briefly wait to enter.  You do not need to make reservations or call ahead.  If you have any COVID-19 symptoms or have been exposed to anyone who has tested positive we ask that you not come but wait for another time.

Staff will be in the building during each of the times listed below to let you into the building.

Mondays:        9:00 a.m. – Noon

Tuesdays:        9:00 a.m. – Noon

6:00 p.m. – 7:30 p.m.

Wednesdays:   9:00 a.m. – Noon

1:30 p.m. – 3:00 p.m.

Sundays:          3:30 p.m. – 5:00 p.m.

Advent Wreath Pictures

If you have assembled an advent wreath to use in your home and to have available as you are watching the weekly worship recordings, we are inviting you to take a picture or a short video of your wreath with two, three, four, or all five candles lit and send it to the church (theresa@aldergatedsm.org or 3600 75th Street, Urbandale, Iowa 50322). We are using some of the pictures and videos you send in worship during the weeks of advent.

Advent Stories & Crafts for All Ages

This year’s Advent craft workshop will look a bit different than usual, just like everything else in 2020. We will have packets of crafts to pick up at the church beginning next week during office hours (Monday-Thursday 8:30am-12:30pm). Throughout Advent, we will be posting four videos of Christmas stories being read, and the crafts included will coincide with each story. The crafts may be completed one at a time to align with the stories as they are posted, but this is not required as any necessary instructions will be included with the craft materials. People of all ages are welcome to pick up craft materials and participate as we will have packets of differing levels of difficulty available for both younger and older “kids.” If you are unable to pick up your packets during office hours, please call the church or email staff to schedule a pick-up time.

U.M.W. Cookie Mission:  Enticing aromas will soon be filling kitchens as festive cookies are being baked in preparation for holiday celebrations. A holiday tradition of Aldersgate’s United Methodist Women is baking dozens of beautifully decorated and very tasty Christmas cookies in preparation for the annual fundraiser, Cookies Yule Love. Many red buckets were filled with cookies and sold each year raising money to support missions in the Des Moines area such as Bedwell Riverside and Hawthorn Hill. This year because of the pandemic U.M.W. won’t host Cookies Yule Love. Instead, the name was changed to simply “Cookie Mission” fundraiser. U.M.W. women are calculating how much money they would spend to virtually make the cookies (time plus cost of ingredients) and are choosing to donate that monetary amount to the Cookie Mission. Cookies Yule Love was supported by the whole church, and so this year anyone is invited to donate money to the Cookie Mission. Please make a notation on your giving envelope or check. Thank you for giving to this year’s U.M.W. Cookie Mission to continue the support of missions.
